theGrio: Family upset at Martin memorial move

The decision to move a memorial to slain Miami teen Trayvon Martin was accompanied by a brief statement emailed to the media Monday.

?In an effort to protect and preserve the remaining Trayvon Martin curbside memorial items, and after communicating with representatives of Trayvon Martin?s family,? the statement read, ?Sanford City Manager, Norton Bonaparte announced that the curbside memorial site items placed outside the entrance of the Retreat at Twin Lakes Subdivision in Sanford have been taken to the Sanford Museum as of 2:30 pm today by city staff.?All the items retrieved have been carefully handled and inventoried.?

However, representatives for Martin?s family, and leaders of Sanford?s African-American community, say key parts of that statement are not true.

Natalie Jackson, an attorney for Martin?s parents, say the family?s attorneys were contacted, but that they referred the city official back to community leaders. And Francis Oliver, who runs the black history museum in Sanford?s Goldsboro neighborhood, says the city initially asked to move the memorial there ? even though Martin was killed in a mixed-race neighborhood in the city, across from an elementary school.

According to Oliver, the Retreat at Twin Lakes homeowner?s association?had been pushing to have the makeshift memorial, comprised of a cross surrounded by cards, stuffed animals and flowers, moved almost from the moment she and other members of Sanford?s black community began to erect it. ?They have been calling the city, they have been calling lawyers and different people,? Oliver told TheGrio.

Reached by telephone, Kent Taylor, who works for the management company representing the Retreat at Twin Lakes homeowner?s association, declined to comment.

Oliver said she was contacted about three weeks ago by a city official, Andrew Thomas, who asked if the group of black civic leaders and ministers called the Concerned Citizens of Sanford, would mind moving the memorial to the Goldsboro museum, located on 13th Street, the dividing line between Sanford proper, and its oldest black neighborhood. ?I said [Trayvon Martin] didn?t die on 13th Street. He didn?t die in the black community.?

Oliver said she spoke with Sanford?s lone black commissioner, Velma Williams, who also agreed the memorial should stay where it was.

According to an attorney for the Martin family, Thomas later contacted Ben Crump, the lead attorney representing Martin?s parents, who told Thomas that since the Martin family doesn?t live in Sanford, they were leaving all decisions about the memorial to the city?s black community. Crump suggested that Thomas contact Ms. Oliver. She says that never happened, and that neither the community leaders, nor the Martin family, gave the consent described in the city release.

Can you hear me now? New strategy discovered to prevent hearing loss

Friday, July 6, 2012

If you're concerned about losing your hearing because of noise exposure (earbud deafness syndrome), a new discovery published online in the FASEB Journal offers some hope. That's because scientists from Germany and Canada show that the protein, AMPK, which protects cells during a lack of energy, also activates a channel protein in the cell membrane that allows potassium to leave the cell. This activity is important because this mechanism helps protect sensory cells in the inner ear from permanent damage following acoustic noise exposure. This information could lead to new strategies and therapies to prevent and treat trauma resulting from extreme noise, especially in people with AMPK gene variants that may make them more vulnerable to hearing loss.

"Future research on the basis of the present study may lead to the development of novel strategies preventing noise-induced hearing loss or accelerating recovery from acoustic trauma," said Florian Lang, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Physiology at the University of T?bingen, in T?bingen, Germany.

To make this discovery, Lang and colleagues compared two groups of mice. The first group was normal and the second lacked the AMPK protein. Hearing of the mice was tested by measuring sound-induced brain activity. All mice were exposed to well-defined noise causing an acoustic trauma and leading to hearing impairment. Prior to noise exposure, the hearing ability was similar in normal mice and mice lacking AMPK. After exposure, the hearing of the normal mice mostly recovered after two weeks, but the recovery of hearing in AMPK-deficient mice remained significantly impaired.

"When it comes to preventing hearing loss, keeping the volume down is still the best strategy, and this discovery doesn't prevent loud music from beating on our ear drums," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "This discovery does help explain why some people seem more likely to lose their hearing than others. At the same time, it also provides a target for new preventive strategies - and perhaps even a treatment - for earbud deafness syndrome."

Romney's wife says woman being eyed for ticket

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's wife has confirmed a tidbit about the vice presidential search process her husband largely has been keeping secret: He's considering choosing a woman.

"We've been looking at that, and I love that option as well," Ann Romney told CBS News in a joint interview with her husband that was broadcast Thursday. She added: "There's a lot of people that Mitt is considering right now."

The disclosure came as the Republican presidential candidate, vacationing with his family at their lakeside estate in Wolfeboro, faced mounting criticism from inside the party about the state of his campaign.

Officially, the campaign says Romney is doing what he's done for the past decade ? enjoying family time during a weeklong holiday in New Hampshire. It's also a break from the campaign trail and a chance to relax before the pre-convention push. But unofficially, the bit of down time is a chance for the contemplative Romney to consider who to tap for the No. 2 slot, how the campaign is going and whether to adjust strategy in a contest that polls show is close.

Romney declined in the interview to describe the status of the vice presidential search, saying: "That's something I'm keeping close with my team." He also didn't respond to growing calls within Republican circles for him to shake up his staff after a series of missteps. Among them: his campaign's initial refusal to side with Republicans who agree with the Supreme Court that the penalty included in President Barack Obama's health care mandate amounts to a tax. Romney eventually agreed with that assessment and, in doing so, broke with a key spokesman.

All that has conservative opinion leaders, including media titan Rupert Murdoch, calling for Romney to shake up his top staff. GOP officials in key states also are increasingly calling on Romney to talk about issues beyond his key message ? that the economy remains weak under Obama ? and to be more specific about what he would do as president.

William Kristol, editor of the conservative Weekly Standard, wrote Thursday that Romney's strategy "strikes me as a path to (narrow) defeat." The Wall Street Journal editorial page also criticized the campaign's "insular staff and strategy that are slowly squandering an historic opportunity."

"Mr. Obama is being hurt by an economic recovery that is weakening for the third time in three years. But Mr. Romney hasn't been able to take advantage, and if anything he is losing ground," the newspaper wrote, calling for "a larger economic narrative and vision than Mr. Romney has so far provided."

Ann Romney, for her part, took issue with the Obama team's strategy, telling her interviewer that Democrats will "do everything they can to destroy Mitt."

"Early on we heard what their strategy was. It was 'kill Romney,'" she said, adding a message to Obama: "Not when I'm next to him you better not."

She also sketched out her own requirements for what she'd like to see in a running mate, saying the person should be "someone that obviously can do the job but will be able to carry through with some of the other responsibilities." She said the person should be someone who will have her husband's back and who he will enjoy being around and have "the same personality type." She added: "Competent, capable and willing to serve this country. I think there's lots of good people out there that fill that bill right now."

Inside Republican circles, speculation also is high about who Romney will choose, with his search well under way and his self-imposed deadline for picking someone "before the convention" looming large. It's the biggest decision he will make between now and when he accepts the GOP presidential nomination in late August.

Talk among GOP insiders has focused on men as likely top prospects, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

But no less than a half-dozen other names also have popped up, including New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte ? who walked in a July Fourth parade with Romney on Wednesday ? as well as South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman.

The only time Romney has said anything substantive about the running mate search was last month when he said his advisers were "thoroughly vetting" Rubio. Romney commented after news reports surfaced citing unnamed advisers who said the Florida senator was not being considered.

It's been four years since John McCain chose then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a rock-ribbed conservative who was little-known outside of her home state, to be the first female on a Republican presidential ticket as he sought a way to both fire up the GOP's core supporters while narrowing Obama's advantage among women.

It wasn't long before questions about Palin's readiness to be president ? and criticism of an inadequate vetting process ? became a major problem for McCain. Critics used the pick to pummel him on his decision-making.

This year, Romney has used that experience as a guide. He's said preparedness to be president is his No. 1 requirement for a vice presidential candidate. Unlike four years ago, Republican base voters are energized largely by a desire to beat Obama.

But polls show that Romney still badly trails Obama among women, and putting one on the ticket ? or even just raising the possibility of a female running mate ? could help carve into that support.

Romney and his wife huddled for at least 45 minutes Tuesday with campaign manager Matt Rhoades, senior adviser Beth Myers and top strategist Stuart Stevens on the deck that overlooks the lawn behind his home.

Further fueling the running-mate talk: Portman was headlining a fundraiser in Concord, N.H., this weekend; he also wrote an opinion piece published in an Ohio newspaper Thursday to counter Obama's campaign appearances in the state Thursday and Friday. Pawlenty and Jindal both were in Ohio for the same reason, to campaign for Romney near Obama's events.

Mattocks lifts Whitecaps past Rapids

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:59 p.m. ET July 4, 2012

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Darren Mattocks scored in the 43rd minute to lift the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night.

Mattocks scored his fourth goal of the season on a defensive breakdown and gave Vancouver (8-4-5) its third win in five games and the second-year team's first victory in Colorado. Joe Cannon, who had 25 shutouts while playing for the Rapids, earned his seventh shutout of the season for the Whitecaps.

Colorado (7-9-1) also lost 1-0 to Vancouver on June 16. The latest loss pushed the Rapids seven points behind the third-place Whitecaps in the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps had one scoring chance in the first half, and Mattocks delivered after Colorado had dominated play.

The Rapids had two chances a minute apart as Cannon denied them both.

Conor Casey broke free along the left sideline and got off a left-footed kick from 30 yards out. Cannon got on all fours to smother the ball in the 31st minute.

A minute later Martin Rivero sent a cross to Jeff Larentowicz, who got a header off but Cannon leaped high and put two hands on the ball to catch it.

Jordan Harvey tried to get the ball down low for Vancouver only to watch Drew Moor step in front to stop the play. However, Moor fanned on the ball and Mattocks had a clear path to it and poked it into an open net.

The Rapids kept the pressure on Cannon in the second half without any success. Cannon steered aside a shot by Brian Mullein from the slot in the 50th minute. Jamie Smith had a clear shot form 30 yards out deflected by a defender wide of the left post in the 61st.
